I want to start with an acknowledgment that I am a white woman from an upper middle class background who went to a traditional private liberal arts college designed for people like me and who has a Ph.D. So, as I grapple with the goal of gaining understanding in the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion, I am relying on listening to other people's experiences and doing the best I can to understand them.
